“Score 1-5 Our visit was a 10
What a stay we had, it was the definition of a last minute night away. We saw that they had one room free and were calling straight away. The lady who answered the phone was so polite and we were booked in within a couple of minutes.

Bags quickly packed and we were on the way to our adventure.

When we got to the hotel we were greeted by Lewis (soon to be our best friend). He took us to our room and showed us round, Lewis told us that the Coach Room was his favourite room and boy was he right!!!!!
A stunning room with a homely library feel and stairs…. which lead to a bathroom which is bigger than my bedroom!!!! The bath is big enough for two and the shower is awesome (just keep turning the handle, it’s not a 12 hour clock type).

After getting ready we went down for dinner, the restaurant is so cozy. The wine list was very good and we went for an amazing camaneire.
The seafood platter to share was stunning and whetted our appetite for the main, we shared a Chateaubriand. What a cut of beef. The Mrs prefers rare, I prefer medium… at which point Lewis dived in and said how he would be able to make us both happy, I got the ends (medium prefect) and she got the middle (rare perfect). We were stuffed, couldn’t eat another bite. We even had to turn down a cheese board which is unknown for me (there is always room for cheese).

We then retired to the lounge where we enjoyed another bottle of wine 2/3 which was brought over and Lewis explained how it was a normally missed jem on their menu. That was good as it meant more for us .

The rest of the evening went amazing and the staff looked after us even when we were giggling kids coming downstairs for ‘fresh air’ the night porter was nice and chatty and made sure we always got back to our room, even if he did have to deliver bad news (at 5am we weren’t allowed cheese).

Then came breakfast, CHEESE!!!!!! assorted meats and fruit for starters, then a cracking ‘full Yorkshire’ breakfast. Juices were good and the coffee was amazing.

We can’t wait to come back and visit the family so we can stay here again”

“Afternoon tea – amazing!!

We booked The tontine for afternoon tea, as we have recently had an awful afternoon tea experience in Hartlepool. I have been here before for afternoon tea, so I knew it would be excellent quality, and I wasn’t wrong!! We booked the day before (quite last minute) but this wasn’t a problem. We arrived at 12, and were shown into the beautiful conservatory. I loved that this was a new area of the building for me to experience, as I have been in the beautiful day room before. There was absolutely no noise at all from the dual carriage way. The decor was fantastic…very authentic and vintage, especially the champagne chandelier! The service was 10 out of 10, and were not rushed at all, it was a very relaxing experience. The food was outstanding, second to absolutely none!! The scones were still warm from the oven, and everything tasted so fresh. Excellent quality, especially the gorgeous homemade passion fruit curd, homemade strawberry jam, and the pastries. Cannot recommend the Tontine enough.”

Might be next to the A19, but this is quality, with staff to match

Can only comment using as a business stopover, on a midweek evening, at a surprisingly low rate given the 5 Star AA rating, but what a find this turned to to be – I honestly didn’t want to leave! An evening meal stretched the budget a little, but worth every penny. Relaxing surroundings, pre dinner drinks, good wine & beer choices and an excellent meal. Accommodation spotless, large room with excellent view over enclosed garden, air con (which worked well on a warm September night), big comfy bed, nice bathroom/shower and all the stuff you’d expect from a luxury hotel. I did have a slight problem with the shower but one call to reception sorted that out. Double glazed windows kept the adjoining A19 traffic to perfectly acceptable levels (in my opinion anyway) but at least the location straight off the busy main road makes it a doddle to find. Free wi-fi, plus security camera-monitored ample parking. Breakfast (inc. in rate) first class, a real treat to start the next day. Staff deserve special mention and are a credit to the hotel, but especially Heather who multi tasked fluently between reception, bar & restaurant duties as if her life depended on it. Also Lewis (a knowledgeable sommelier/Assistant Restaurant Manager) was outstanding. This was the best I’ve experienced in thirty years as a business traveller, given what I paid. Weekend rates obviously take a hike and a la carte menu prices reflect the quality of the food and service, but it is without doubt a high class establishment and not surprisingly they attract some illustrious guests, as is evident from some of the many framed prints on the walls. Looking forward to a return visit next time I’m in the area.

Birthday Breakfast

We’re greeted by the lovely Libby! Nothing was too much trouble for this lady! Libby went out of her way to make sure our breakfast was perfect! A great way start to my birthday! The hotel as recently been taken over & it looks great! Would visit again!

Excellent Sunday Lunch

My wife and I went for Sunday lunch and it was excellent. My wife’s beef and my pork were perfect as were the roast spuds which deserve a special mention. Leave room for pudding – my wife is still talking about the crepe suzette. The Tontine is having a bit of a refurb below stairs right now so we ate upstairs for those that know the Tontine. Real open fires in quality surroundings – actually, spot on for this time of year. Staff were excellent – we were sorry to leave. Will be back and soon.

New Year’s Eve

Family of 4 stayed and enjoyed New Year celebrations. Delighted to be welcomed by Bartek. Service overall was outstanding. Good evening meal served with courtesy and professionalism. Breakfast lovely. Under the new management this venue will return to its former glory.
